Catamaran Resort Hotel is for the birds, literally!
When we checked into our room at the Catamaran Resort one warm
January evening, the sky was dark, the night was young and little did we know
that the natives were resting in their nests. Completing check in to the sounds
of a huge, splashing waterfall, we wove past the lounge and restaurant,
navigated the outdoor walkways mesmerized by tiki torch flames and opened the
door to a spacious suite.
Everything was absolutely wonderful. We called the concierge
to make a reservation at Tony Roma's across the street. It was Friday evening,
6:30 p.m. and we thought ribs sounded perfect. Walking right in as the concierge
suggested, we just beat a huge crowd and escaped a 35 minute wait. After a warm
meal and a stroll along Pacific Beach next to the restaurant, we walked back to
our resort across the street in time to catch a free ride on the Bahia Belle,
which stops at the hotel dock several times nightly for a rides around the bay.
Our ground floor room featured a walk out patio facing Mission Bay which
provided a quick route to the boat dock. Hotel guests are each issued one ticket
per night of stay to ride the boat. What a perk!
The bar was too crowded to enter and buy a cocktail on this
Friday evening so I journeyed to the upper deck where I stood and gazed at the
city lights, trying to orient myself. As magical as any experience, this ride is
highly recommended.
Night turned to day and I slept late. I thought I heard
squawking at 11 a.m. but I had to be crazy, right? As I dressed and exited
my room to walk to the Starbucks nearby, I saw birds. Big birds of every color
sat perched on posts just beyond my suite and walkway. Beautiful, exotic birds
sat in the shady grove above a koi pond just outside my hotel door. A bird care
professional told me that this was their home. The exotic birds slept next door
in a suite beside mine. I have to admit that they were quiet as mice
throughout the night and were well behaved, even in the morning. This
treat was one of the many delights guests can experience at Catamaran Resort.
The resort includes high rise view rooms and suites in a main
building that is surrounded by two story buildings with rooms and suites. The
hotel features kayaks, jetskis and sailboats for rent, many fun things to see
and explore in a location on Mission Bay with the beach directly across the
street. The beach includes the historic Crystal Pier, Tourmaline Beach (a
favorite spot for surfers) and further down is the Mission Beach and Belmont
Park.
The Catamaran Resort is one of the many reasons San Diego is
tough to beat for accommodations and getaway vacations.
