Coronado Island, located
directly across the bay from downtown San Diego, is an
ideal vacation destination. Coronado Island is a 15
minute commute from San Diego's Lindbergh Field Airport
and an easy drive to San Diego’s attractions including
the World-Famous San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal
Park, Sea World and Legoland.
Coronado Village features quaint streets lined with
boutiques, shops and restaurants. There is an island
bike path, two Marinas, golf course and a full range of
accommodations. It is also home to the legendary Hotel
del Coronado and the Naval Amphibious Base at North
Island.
Coronado, meaning "the crowned one", has a rich history
including Spanish explorers, industrial tycoons and
Hollywood filming. Many of the homes and businesses were
built around the 1900’s and the mix of Victorian and
modern day architecture gives the island a unique
personality.
Wide and uncrowded, Coronado beaches are the perfect
outdoor playgrounds for kids and adults. The Southern
California weather is temperate and from mid-April
through late September the water is warm and the surf
mild. The sand appears to sparkle, which is actually the
presence of the mineral Mica, also known as sugar sand.
Central Beach runs the length of Ocean Boulevard’s
backdrop of fine homes and Victorian mansions.
Lifeguards are on duty seasonally. Other services
include restrooms, shower facilities, Wheelchair access
ramps, volleyball nets and beach grooming daily. Parking
is limited. Central Beach is a great spot for ship
watching – San Diego is the home port for the U. S.
Navy’s Pacific fleet, and whales may be seen December
through February as they migrate south to Mexico.
Silver Strand State Beach is located along highway 75,
between Coronado Cays Boulevard and the City of Imperial
Beach. A lifeguard is on duty seasonally. Other services
include restrooms, showers and fire rings. There is
ample parking available as well as overnight RV camping.
Bayside, Tidelands Park features children’s playgrounds,
skateboard park, fitness course, ball fields, picnic
tables, restrooms and free public parking. Glorietta Bay
includes a boat launch ramp, park, playground, restrooms
and free parking. Paddleboats, sailboats, jet skis and
deep sea fishing rentals are available.
